Stayers' Hurdle trends
Three miles over hurdles produces a war of attrition rather than a procession, and the Stayers' Hurdle has been the most punter-unfriendly of the four championship races. Favourites have won just 13 of the 54 runnings since 1972, and only three of the last twenty.
The prices tell the story. Seven winners have returned 20/1 or bigger, including Lisnagar Oscar at 50/1 in 2020, Sire Du Berlais at 33/1 in 2023 and Home By The Lee at the same price in 2026. Horses whose stamina is not fully proven are found out late, and the market rarely identifies which ones those will be.
Six and seven-year-olds have won 33 of the 54, though the race is kinder to older horses than the others: Crimson Embers won aged eleven in 1986, and both Sire Du Berlais and Home By The Lee did the same. Big Buck's four straight wins from 2009 is the modern benchmark, and Ruby Walsh rode five of the winners.
Stayers' Hurdle winners on file: Home By The Lee, Bob Olinger, Teahupoo, Sire Du Berlais, Flooring Porter. The market has been a poor guide here, with only 1 of the last 5 winners going off favourite. The biggest-priced winner in that time was Home By The Lee at 33/1 in 2026.
Festival form
10 of the 54 Stayers' Hurdle winners on file had already won at the Cheltenham Festival before taking this race. The most recent:

- Flooring Porter (2022) had won the 2021 Stayers' Hurdle.
- Big Buck's (2012) had won the 2009 Stayers' Hurdle, the 2010 Stayers' Hurdle, the 2011 Stayers' Hurdle.
- Big Buck's (2011) had won the 2009 Stayers' Hurdle, the 2010 Stayers' Hurdle.
- Big Buck's (2010) had won the 2009 Stayers' Hurdle.

- Inglis Drever (2007) had won the 2005 Stayers' Hurdle.
- Baracouda (2003) had won the 2002 Stayers' Hurdle.
Earlier wins are counted only where they appear in this archive, so the true figure is higher.
Every Stayers' Hurdle winner since 1972
The Stayers' Hurdle has been run 54 times since 1972, with 1 year lost to weather, war or disease. The longest-priced winner is Lisnagar Oscar at 50/1 in 2020, the shortest Big Buck's at 5/6 in 2012. 18 of the 54 winners were trained in Ireland. Mares have won it 2 times.
