Ultima Handicap Chase trends
A staying handicap chase over three miles and a furlong, and a race Lucinda Russell has made her own, winning three of the last five with Corach Rambler twice and Myretown in 2025. Corach Rambler went on to win the 2023 Grand National a few weeks after his second Ultima, which tells you the class of horse this race can unearth.
Prices have sat in a sensible band, between 6/1 and 18/1, so this is not a race where 50/1 shots come from nowhere. It is a race where a well-handicapped stayer with course form is worth more than a flashy recent win, and Russell's record suggests some yards simply target it better than others.
Ultima Handicap Chase winners on file: Johnnywho, Myretown, Chianti Classico, Corach Rambler. The market has been a poor guide here, with only 2 of the last 5 winners going off favourite. The biggest-priced winner in that time was Johnnywho at 18/1 in 2026.
Festival form
1 of the 5 winners on file had already won at the Cheltenham Festival before taking this race.
- Corach Rambler (2023) had won the 2022 Ultima Handicap Chase.
Winners without an earlier win listed here had not won at the Festival since 2022, which is as far back as this archive currently runs.
See the full card for each Festival on the results by year pages, or the Champion Day page for how the rest of the day went.
